What is ITIL?
The IT Infrastructure Library (ITIL) consists of five books which describe a possible implementation of IT-Service-Management. ITIL has become the de-facto-standard for IT Operations. The content of the books of the current ITIL version 3 is organized according the lifecycle of IT Service Operations: Strategy, Design, Transition, Operation, and Continual Improvement. ITIL describes the processes, structures and tools necessary for operating an IT infrastructure.
The five ITIL books are:
- Service Strategy (SS)
- Service Design (SD)
- Service Transition (ST)
- Service Operation (SO)
- Continual Service Improvement (CSI)
ITIL was developed by the United Kingdom's Office of Government Commerce (OGC). Information Technology Service Management Forum (itSMF) founded in 1991 provides a platform for the exchange of knowledge and experience. It is a non-profit organization which has been established in order to help facilitate the expansion, support and coordination of the itSMF community around the world.
