23. base camp 18.04.2016: How do lean and agile help through the crisis?

Spring is here and we are deliberately countering it and the good order situation at our last base camp with a counterpoint. Because now we can talk about it in a relaxed way...

"How do lean and agile help through the crisis?"

This was the theme of the 23rd Base Camp, our established format for all managers who are interested in discussing current topics with us in a relaxed setting. And that's exactly what we did.

We started the evening with an interview with Jörg Battenfeld, Managing Director of wibas GmbH. Looking at some key figures and market developments together helped us to understand why we should already be thinking about the crisis today, even though we are all doing very well at the moment.

But the management's thesis remained bold: organizations with agile and lean principles see crises as an opportunity!

thumb_IMG_6485_1024What did the participants say? Small groups discussed whether the following agile and lean principles really make organizations more "crisis resilient":

  • Agile principles
    • Empowerment & self-organization
    • Early & regular delivery
    • Review & customization
    • Transparency
    • Use of a cycle
  • Lean principles
    • Define value from the customer's perspective
    • Identify the value stream
    • Get the work flowing
    • Create the suction
    • Always strive for perfection

The presentation of the group results was followed by a controversial and exciting discussion in a fishbowl format. In a mixed and rotating discussion round, we looked at the topic from very different perspectives.

As different as they were, however, our common conviction was obvious. Lean principles help to create the greatest possible value for the customer, avoiding waste and utilizing employee skills. Agile principles offer the ability to react quickly in a complex world. Organizations that understand this are sure to face crises with a strong and challenging mindset!
