On October 8-10, the Global Scrum Gathering Europe opened its doors in London. Sascha and I were both there and would like to share a few impressions with you.
Coaching Clinic
One of the best things for us is always the coaching clinic at the Scrum Gatherings. At a coaching clinic, anyone can come along and be coached by one of the coaches who are currently on duty. It's always nice to see how many people we can get to know and help there.
Sessions
As with every Scrum Gathering, we had the opportunity to attend many different sessions. This year the sessions focused on the following topics:
- Creating better leaders
- Creating better Product Owners
- Creating better Scrum Masters
- Creating better teams
BMW's LeSS Adoption
Among them were many exciting presentations, including a joint presentation by BMW and Craig Lahrmen on their LeSS adaptation and, above all, how they had generated the motivation for it within the company. The following sketch summarizes the presentation a little.
Scrum @ Scale with Jeff Sutherland
Jeff Sutherland also presented his scaling approach "Scrum @ Scale". I have to admit at this point that if I hadn't already known the concept beforehand, I would have been lost in the 40 minutes or so that were spent talking about it. But Jeff started by explaining how he sees Scrum and agility as being connected. This part was very exciting paired with Jeff's personal experiences.
Validated Learning with Jeff Patton
Workshops are fun when you work together and have a good exchange. This was the case, for example, in Jeff Patton's session "Experimentation & validated learning". The topic of when a requirement should actually be included in the product backlog and when not was discussed in a varied way through work in pairs and impulses from Jeff.
Conclusion
It was an exciting few days with lots of discussions and new ideas to take away with us.
If you're curious, the next Gathering in Europe will take place in Vienna in October 2019, find out more here.
