More than 50 people from various industries came together in Darmstadt on February 6, 2020 to discuss topics relating to product, solution and portfolio management in a scaled environment. A great response for us organizers, because compared to the RTEs, we had estimated the POPM managers to be more reserved. But that's the way it is with initial assessments, they can be misleading. That's a good thing.
Luke Hohmann kicked things off with a keynote speech. It was about the big picture, namely how to solve awesome superproblems. Using examples from urban planning, Luke showed how agile tools can be used to solve serious problems while at the same time involving citizens. Participatory budgeting was one of the tools that Luke went into more detail about and that is used in the SAFe® framework at the portfolio level.
Wait a minute...mhhhh....what is Luke Hohmann doing at a POPM BarCamp? Luke Hohmann, the author of the book Innovation Games, now works at Scaled Agile Inc (SAI), where he continues to develop the SAFe® framework in the area of product and solution management. Luke was at wibas in Darmstadt a few days before the POPM Barcamp to give a master class on the new SAFe® Agile Product and Solution Management (APSM) training. So, back to the topic.
With this impetus, we started the session planning, which was very disciplined - like a tightly managed backlog refinement. Contributions from the participants ranged from metrics for target achievement to mapping processes to backlogs and handling a Tyrannosaurus PM. Fortunately, no one was bitten in the latter session either 😉
Manuel Marsch, Felix Rüssel and Matthias Racke moderated us through the event and the result was the following session wall: content, content and more content - wow!
And off we go:
OKRs are now more prominent in SAFe® 5.0, which was discussed in depth in one session.
In addition to Luke, two other representatives from Scaled Agile Inc (SAI) were on hand to offer an ask me anything session where attendees could ask any questions they had.
Under the hashtag #POPMBarCamp was tweeted vigorously, as our Twitter wall shows.
This also resulted in beautiful sketchnotes that summarize the keynote, for example.
We are delighted with the positive feedback and the lively participation and can say with certainty that we will be inviting the Content Authority again next year 🙂
