Theater: Agile!

"The Golden Dragon" by Roland Schimmelpfennig at the musische gruppe auerbach 2014

I experienced during an unusual I experienced how agile principles also work outside the business context and how the director (as product owner) shapes the culture and values of a theater project with his attitude.

In contrast to the directive directing style, the director encouraged us actors to participate and challenged our creativity. From the beginning, he brought in experts in dance, acrobatics and vocal improvisation in his "post-heroic" approach. This led us to live agile values such as focus, courage, openness, self-commitment and respect for each other.

This resulted in trust, intimacy and creativity. We intuitively applied some agile principles in our rehearsal work.

Time frame:
The play was divided into several storylines, which were interwoven in short scenes like in a movie. We therefore decided to organize the rehearsal process according to storylines rather than chronologically. These resulted in our first sprints, which led to early visible results.

Continuous review and adaptation:
This is the basis of all theater work and leads efficiently to the result. However, we deliberately left room for creative improvisation for one of the sprints. In later sprints, we then took the efficiency concept into account again, consolidated the ideas and effectively rehearsed them towards the goal.

Empowerment and self-organization:
We lived in particular in the stage construction, costume and advertising departments. The team worked completely independently and achieved impressive results with the different talents.

Retrospective:
I recognize that the agile values and principles also lead to an enthusiastic team and optimal results in the theater world. In the next production, I will work towards trying out the Scrum techniques and roles more stringently.
