20. base camp 9.11.: "Innovation - having a good idea quickly"

Can you help us with our process management project?

"You'd have to think about something ... ."

How do you come up with a new process? How do you come up with new ideas together or individually in a group without just regurgitating what has already been discussed x times and discarded y times?

Robert Vogel from "XCellent4H" - Institute for People in the Changing World of Work - began his keynote speech at the base camp meeting on Monday evening with these questions.

Robert Vogel knows from experience:

"In a dynamic environment, classic process management generates typical process monsters!" Why is that the case? So-called "sluggish markets" are "complicated", i.e. there are linear tasks and no surprises. "Dynamic markets", on the other hand, are "complex", i.e. tasks are not linear and surprises are the order of the day. Companies now try to solve complex problems with complicated tools. And that goes wrong!

Dynamic markets require modern management tools. These include, for example, the Agile methodssuch as Scrum and Kanban as well as techniques for working with large groups, such as World Café and Crazy Eights.

Robert used the latter to try out innovation with us and show us that it is in all of us. A few tricks help to bring it to light!

Crazy Eight - generate 320 ideas in just 13 minutes.

How does it work? Like this:

  • Form groups of 3-6 people
  • Present your problem(s) to the groups
  • Everyone in the group gets an A3 sheet of paper and folds it exactly three times. This results in 8 small rectangles: the Crazy Eights!
  • Set the stopwatch to 8 minutes. Here we go! Everyone has exactly 1 minute per rectangle and idea.
  • Then everyone in the group presents their best idea to the others in their group.
  • This is followed by a second round with new paper.
  • At the end, the group considers which idea to pursue further and prepares a short presentation for the other groups.

Done! With 20 people, that's a total of 320 ideas! Try it out! It's great fun to spin ideas without hesitation or questioning. Everything is allowed. Even stealing ideas from your neighbor and developing them further 🙂

On Monday evening, we formed four groups of five people each. Three groups wanted to deal with this problem: "What do we do in our company to find the dynamic components in our processes?
Group four chose this topic: "How do we manage to bring ideas that arise in small groups into the company without them being talked about?

The results:

Group 2 impressively demonstrated how they find the dynamic components in their processes:

Group 3 presented their idea orally:

Group 4 combined several ideas from the group into a single solution:

The "Undercover Boss" (known from the RTL series) changes sides and observes his company from the perspective of his employees. From this, he generates valuable new ideas. He then assigns a small team of volunteers (innovation team) to implement these ideas. Each employee has a "per capita" budget for innovation, consisting of e.g. 5-10 working days per year. The innovation team develops this idea in a glass laboratory. This creates curiosity among the other employees. At the end, there is a prototype that is presented to the other employees and possibly customers. If a customer or another employee likes the idea, they can participate in the implementation (crowd-funding). The finished product is created in a further implementation cycle. Innovation idea implemented!

And finally there was feedback on the base camp. Thank you very much!
